When to worry about wrist pain with de Quervain's tenosynovitis

De Quervain's tenosynovitis irritates the tendon coverings on the thumb side of the wrist. Lifting a child, turning a key, opening a jar, or moving the thumb can increase pain in that area. Wrist pain is a very common presentation of De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, though wrist pain alone does not confirm the diagnosis. Other tendon, joint, or nerve problems can feel similar.

Avoid repeated thumb pinching and lifting with the wrist angled toward the little-finger side. Keep loads close to the body and use the whole hand where possible. Short periods of comfortable rest, a clinician-recommended thumb-and-wrist support, and gradual exercises may help. Do not force a painful thumb stretch or repeatedly test the painful movement.

Arrange a review if pain keeps interfering with sleep, caring tasks, work, or thumb movement, or if it does not settle after reducing aggravating activity. Seek prompt care after a fall or blow, for marked swelling or redness, fever, new numbness, or inability to move the thumb. A sudden cold or discoloured hand needs urgent attention.

Ask whether the painful area matches the involved tendons, how long to use a support, and which thumb movements are safe during recovery. Ask what findings would suggest a fracture, joint problem, or nerve irritation instead.
