When to Worry About White Patches on Skin With Tinea Versicolor

Tinea versicolor is a superficial yeast-related skin condition that can produce lighter, darker, or pinkish patches with fine scale. It often appears on the chest, back, shoulders, or upper arms, and may be more visible after sun exposure. Mild itch can occur. The yeast can settle with treatment before the skin colour returns, so fading colour alone does not always mean the condition is still active.

Use the antifungal wash, cream, or shampoo recommended for you and follow its directions. Keep the skin cool and dry, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid sharing towels or clothing. Do not scrub the patches or apply steroid cream unless a clinician has advised it. If the rash repeatedly returns, ask about a prevention plan rather than repeatedly changing products yourself.

Book a review if the diagnosis is uncertain, treatment irritates the skin, patches continue to spread, or scale and itch persist after the advised course. Seek prompt care for marked tenderness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or a rash involving the eyes or mouth. Those features are not typical of an uncomplicated superficial colour change.

Ask whether the patches are still active or are only recovering their colour, how to use the chosen antifungal, and when improvement should be assessed. If episodes recur, ask whether heat, sweating, or another skin condition could be contributing and how to reduce future flares.
