When to Worry About White Patches on Skin With Lichen Sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus can make skin look pale or white, thin, fragile, and finely wrinkled. It often affects the genital or anal area, although other skin can be involved. Itching, burning, soreness, or discomfort during sex may occur. A stable appearance does not remove the need for regular clinical follow-up because irritated or damaged skin can be difficult to assess at home.

Use the treatment prescribed for lichen sclerosus exactly as directed and keep follow-up appointments. Wash gently with lukewarm water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and avoid scented products, scrubbing, and tight clothing. A plain emollient can reduce friction if your clinician says it is suitable. Do not scratch, pick, or attempt to remove the pale skin.

Contact a dermatologist or clinician promptly for a new lump, a persistent sore, bleeding without an obvious cause, a thickened area, a change in colour or texture, or pain that is worsening. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or difficulty passing urine. These changes do not identify a cause by themselves, but they need examination.
