When should you worry about waters breaking if you have premature rupture of membranes?

Waters Breaking is a very common presentation of Premature Rupture of Membranes. Fluid may be a gush or a slow, repeated leak that is difficult to distinguish from urine or vaginal discharge. The membranes help protect the pregnancy, so a suspected rupture is assessed by the maternity team. They may ask about colour, smell, timing, contractions, pain, fever, and fetal movement, then decide what monitoring is needed.

Call your maternity unit or obstetric team immediately for instructions, even if the fluid leak is small or stops. Wear a clean maternity pad to observe the fluid; do not use a tampon, douche, or have vaginal sex until assessed. Note the time, colour, smell, and amount, and take your pregnancy records and medicines list if you are asked to attend. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell.

Seek emergency maternity help for heavy bleeding, green or brown fluid, fever or chills, severe abdominal pain, regular contractions, reduced fetal movement, dizziness, or feeling very unwell. Urgent assessment is also needed if you see or feel something protruding from the vagina. These signs can indicate infection, labour, fetal distress, or another complication and require immediate clinical evaluation.

Ask how the membranes will be checked, where to call overnight, and which activities to avoid while waiting. Ask how fetal movement and temperature should be monitored, what follow-up is planned, and which changes mean you should return urgently.
