When to worry about a vulval lump with genital warts

Genital warts can form small raised or clustered growths on the vulval skin. A lump may also have another cause, such as an irritated blocked gland, a skin cyst, or an inflamed hair follicle. A clinician can examine its surface, position and texture rather than relying on appearance alone. New colour change, an open sore, a firm area, or a lump that keeps enlarging deserves a closer look.

Arrange a routine sexual-health or gynaecology appointment if the lump is new, persistent, changing, or difficult to identify. Keep the area gently clean and dry, avoid squeezing or cutting the lump, and do not use ordinary wart-removal products on vulval skin. Pause sexual contact if rubbing is painful, and use barrier protection until you have discussed transmission and treatment with a clinician.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump bleeds without being rubbed, becomes markedly painful, grows quickly, turns unusually dark, develops an ulcer, or produces pus or a bad-smelling discharge. Fever, spreading redness, increasing warmth, or difficulty passing urine can indicate inflammation or infection. Emergency help is appropriate for heavy bleeding, severe rapidly worsening pain, or inability to urinate.

Ask whether the lump fits genital warts or needs another examination; whether testing for other sexually transmitted infections is appropriate; which treatment suits its location; how to reduce irritation and transmission; and which changes should bring you back sooner.
