When to worry about visible deformity after a clavicle injury

The clavicle is the slender bone linking the breastbone to the shoulder. After a break, swelling, bruising, or movement of the bone ends can create a bump, dip, or uneven shoulder line. Most people with Clavicle Fracture notice visible deformity after injury, but the shape alone does not reveal whether the skin, nerves, blood vessels, or nearby chest structures are involved. Pain with shoulder movement and guarding the arm are also common features.

Support the injured arm in the position that feels most comfortable, using a sling only if one has been provided or advised. Avoid lifting, reaching, pushing, or repeatedly checking the bump. Apply a wrapped cold pack for short periods if sensation and skin are normal. Do not press on the fracture or attempt to realign the shoulder. Arrange prompt clinical assessment, particularly after a fall, collision, or direct blow.

Seek emergency care for an open wound, rapidly worsening swelling, severe chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, faintness, or a hand that becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak. New tingling or inability to move the fingers also needs urgent review. If the deformity is new but these signs are absent, arrange same-day or prompt assessment so alignment and the skin can be checked and treatment planned.
