When to worry about vaginal discharge with gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea can infect the cervix and cause increased or unusual discharge. Symptoms may be subtle or absent, and colour or smell cannot diagnose gonorrhoea. Testing may use a urine sample or a swab, depending on the sites that need checking.

Pelvic pain, bleeding after sex or between periods, pain when urinating, or pain during sex can suggest inflammation beyond the vagina. Gonorrhoea can also affect the throat or rectum, so mention oral or anal sex when arranging tests.

Arrange prompt sexual-health testing and avoid sex until a clinician gives clear advice. If testing confirms gonorrhoea, complete the recommended treatment and ensure recent partners are contacted through a confidential health service. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because the correct medicine depends on the infection and local guidance.

Get prompt care for discharge with pelvic pain, fever, vomiting, or worsening pain. Seek urgent help for severe pain, faintness, or pregnancy with pelvic pain or bleeding. These symptoms may indicate pelvic infection or another condition needing immediate assessment.
