When to worry about trouble getting pregnant with unexplained infertility

Unexplained infertility means the usual initial checks have not identified why conception has been difficult. It does not mean that nothing is happening or that the concern is imagined. Ovulation timing, sperm function, egg factors, the fallopian tubes, the uterus, and interactions between them can be difficult to measure fully with initial tests.

Ask the fertility team to explain what has been checked, what remains uncertain, and when the plan should be reassessed. Keep records of cycles, treatments, side effects, and test results. Review whether additional evaluation or treatment is appropriate for both partners. Shared decisions should reflect your age, health, time trying, previous treatment, and personal preferences.

Arrange an earlier review for new pelvic pain, bleeding between periods, very irregular cycles, changes in sexual function, or a significant new illness or medicine. Seek urgent care for severe pelvic pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding with possible pregnancy. A change in symptoms deserves fresh assessment even after earlier tests were reassuring.

Ask what the diagnosis includes and excludes, whether any test should be repeated, how long to continue the current plan, and what would trigger a change. Ask about benefits, burdens, alternatives, and emotional support for each option.
