Endometriosis is tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus. Inflammation and scar tissue can affect the ovaries, tubes, or pelvic anatomy, while pain may make timed intercourse difficult. The effect varies widely, and having endometriosis does not determine an individual’s ability to become pregnant. Fertility concerns may exist even when pain is mild.

A clinician may assess ovulation, ovarian reserve, the uterus and tubes, and sperm factors. Discuss whether symptom treatment, surgery, trying to conceive, or assisted conception best fits your plans. Fertility goals can change which treatments are suitable.

Arrange review for worsening pelvic pain, painful sex, painful bowel movements, or cycle-related bowel or bladder symptoms. Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or pain or bleeding after a positive pregnancy test.
