When to worry about treatment-related mouth soreness with oral mucositis

Mouth Soreness From Cancer Treatment is a very common presentation of Oral Mucositis. Treatment can irritate the lining of the mouth, leaving areas tender, red, swollen, or ulcerated. Pain may make chewing, swallowing, speaking, or brushing difficult. Dry mouth and changes in taste can add to the problem. The soreness can also make it harder to drink enough fluid or keep up nutrition.

Follow the mouth-care plan from your oncology team. Use only recommended rinses, brushes, gels, or pain medicines, because some products can irritate damaged tissue. Choose soft, moist foods and cool or lukewarm drinks if these feel comfortable. Avoid tobacco, alcohol-containing mouthwash, and foods that are sharp, spicy, acidic, or very hot. Record changes in pain, sores, drinking, and eating so your team can adjust support.

Seek urgent medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine, feel faint, have new fever, notice pus, have swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or see bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure. Call your treatment team early if pain is worsening or you cannot take prescribed medicines. Do not wait for the next appointment when mouth symptoms are interfering with hydration or treatment.
