What may be causing it

De Quervain's tenosynovitis irritates the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Pain may travel along that side of the wrist and increase with gripping, lifting, opening a jar, or moving the thumb across the palm. Tenderness and swelling near the wrist can occur, while tingling is less typical and may suggest another nerve or joint problem.

Ways to reduce irritation

Limit movements that repeatedly pinch, grip, or lift with the thumb. Keep the wrist in a neutral position during tasks, take regular breaks, and use a thumb-and-wrist support if a clinician recommends one. Do not force painful stretches or repeatedly perform movements that reproduce the pain. A hand therapist can help adjust daily activities.

When to seek care

Arrange review if pain is not settling, grip is becoming weaker, swelling increases, or daily tasks remain difficult despite reducing strain. Seek urgent care after an injury with deformity, sudden inability to move the thumb, marked redness and heat with fever, or new numbness, colour change, or a cold hand.
