A change may relate to the cancer, infection, dental inflammation, or treatment effects, so the location and associated symptoms help guide assessment.

Pay attention to a lump that feels fixed, changes over time, or is accompanied by a persistent sore throat, mouth ulcer, hoarseness, ear pain, or difficulty moving food. These signs do not establish a cause, but they give your team useful context.

Contact the team managing your head and neck cancer and describe the side of the neck, exact position, onset, tenderness, and change in size. Mention dental work, a recent cold, skin irritation, mouth sores, and any treatment you have received. Your clinician may examine your mouth and neck and decide whether further testing is needed.

Continue prescribed medicines unless instructed otherwise. Do not puncture, squeeze, or repeatedly measure the lump. Keep dental and oncology appointments, since both areas can contribute to neck symptoms.

Seek emergency help for sudden breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, blue lips, severe bleeding, or confusion. Contact your cancer team the same day for worsening swallowing, new voice change, coughing blood, fever with chills, or pain that is escalating.
