When to worry about swollen glands with strep throat

Strep throat can trigger tender lymph nodes in the front of the neck as the immune system responds. A sudden sore throat, fever, painful swallowing, red throat and patches on the tonsils may occur. Swollen glands do not by themselves distinguish strep from viral throat infections.

A clinician can decide whether testing is needed. Until assessed, avoid sharing drinks or utensils and wash hands regularly, especially around children and older adults.

Arrange medical advice when strep throat is suspected, particularly if swallowing is painful or fever is affecting normal activity. Sip fluids, choose soft foods and use suitable pain relief as directed by a clinician or the product label.

If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed and report a rash, breathing problem or other possible reaction. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, trouble opening the mouth, rapidly increasing neck swelling or signs of dehydration. These symptoms can indicate a complication requiring immediate assessment.

Ask whether a throat test is appropriate, how to manage pain and fluids, when close contact is safe, and which symptoms suggest a complication. If treatment is prescribed, confirm what to do after a missed dose.
