When to worry about swollen glands with rubella

Rubella often causes small, tender lymph nodes behind the ears and at the back of the neck. A mild fever, sore throat, tiredness and a fine rash may occur as well. These signs overlap with other illnesses, so swollen glands do not establish a rubella diagnosis.

Rubella can harm an unborn baby. Anyone who is pregnant, may be pregnant or has been exposed during pregnancy should contact a healthcare professional promptly and avoid close contact with pregnant people until advised.

Call before attending a clinic if rubella is suspected, describe the rash and gland locations, and follow isolation advice. Rest, drink fluids and use suitable fever relief as directed. Do not rely on appearance alone to decide whether the infection is rubella.

Arrange review if swelling becomes very painful, the rash changes quickly, fever persists or the person cannot maintain fluids.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, confusion, a seizure, severe headache with neck stiffness, fainting or signs of dehydration. Seek prompt pregnancy advice after possible exposure, even if symptoms are mild.
