When to worry about swollen glands with measles

Measles can activate immune tissue in the neck and behind the ears, making nearby lymph nodes feel tender or enlarged. This can occur alongside fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a spreading rash. Swollen glands alone cannot confirm the cause, so the whole pattern and a clinician’s assessment matter.

If measles is suspected, avoid close contact with others and call the clinic before attending. This allows the team to reduce exposure to people who could become seriously ill.

Rest, drink regularly and use only medicines suitable for the person’s age and health history. Do not give aspirin to a child or teenager unless a clinician has specifically advised it. Keep notes about fever, fluid intake, breathing and changes in the glands.

Arrange medical advice if the glands are becoming more painful, the fever is not settling, or the person is unable to drink normally. Keep the rash and illness timeline ready for the appointment.

Get urgent help for difficult breathing, blue or grey lips, unusual drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, severe headache with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration or a person who is rapidly becoming more unwell. A gland that is red, hot or draining pus also needs prompt assessment.
