When to worry about swollen ankles with deep vein thrombosis

Swollen Ankles is a common presentation of Deep Vein Thrombosis. A clot in a deep vein can slow blood flow and cause swelling, aching, warmth, or colour change in one leg. An ankle that becomes more swollen or painful can mean the problem is changing and needs a clinician's assessment.

Follow the treatment plan provided by your clinician and take anticoagulant medicine exactly as prescribed if it has been started. Do not massage the swollen leg or begin strenuous exercise without advice. Note which leg is affected, when the change began, and whether pain, warmth, or breathlessness has appeared. Arrange urgent medical guidance for new or worsening symptoms.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or a racing heartbeat with weakness, because a clot can travel to the lungs. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly increasing one-sided swelling, pain, warmth, or colour change, even without chest symptoms.

Ask whether the swelling needs imaging, how to take and monitor anticoagulants, which activities are suitable, and what bleeding symptoms require help. Tell the clinician about recent travel, surgery, immobility, pregnancy, or previous clots when relevant.
