When to worry about spreading redness with erysipelas

Erysipelas affects the upper skin and often creates a raised, sharply defined red area. The skin may be hot, painful, swollen, and tender, with fever or chills. A visible edge can help track whether the area is changing, but appearance alone cannot show how deep an infection is. New swelling, fluid-filled blisters, or red lines moving away from the area deserve medical review.

Contact a clinician promptly for assessment and follow the treatment plan you are given. Rest the affected limb and raise it when comfortable. Do not massage, scratch, drain blisters, or apply irritating products. Keep broken skin clean and covered as advised. Mark the outer edge and note when symptoms began, along with any recent cut, bite, or skin condition.

Get urgent care if the red area is expanding quickly, the pain is escalating, or you have fever, shaking chills, dizziness, confusion, repeated vomiting, or marked weakness. Emergency help is needed for fainting, breathing difficulty, a rapidly darkening area, or infection near an eye. People with reduced immunity or poor circulation should seek advice early when symptoms change.

Ask how erysipelas will be monitored, when improvement should begin, and what symptoms mean the treatment needs changing. Tell the clinician about allergies, prior skin infections, swelling, circulation problems, diabetes, immune conditions, and current medicines.
