When to worry about a sore throat with scarlet fever

Scarlet fever can cause sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, and a fine rough rash that may feel like sandpaper. The tongue may look red and bumpy, while the face can appear flushed with paleness around the mouth. Sore Throat is a common presentation of Scarlet Fever, but a clinician must assess the full pattern because other infections can also cause throat pain and rash.

Contact a clinician promptly if scarlet fever is suspected, particularly when fever and rash occur together. Encourage fluids and soft foods, rest, and use symptom medicines only as advised for the person's age and health. Follow the prescribed antibiotic course if one is given. Keep the person away from close contacts according to local medical advice and wash hands regularly.

Get emergency help for difficult breathing, inability to swallow saliva, blue lips, collapse, confusion, or severe dehydration. Seek prompt review if the rash spreads quickly, becomes blistered or painful, fever is not easing, or the person becomes unusually sleepy. A child who is not drinking or passing urine normally needs medical advice without delay.
