When to worry about sore throat with allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis can produce mucus that drains from the nose into the throat. This postnasal drip may cause irritation, coughing and repeated throat clearing. A blocked nose can also lead to mouth breathing, which dries the throat. Itching of the nose and eyes, sneezing and clear nasal discharge support an allergy pattern, whereas a new fever or marked illness may point to another cause.

Notice whether symptoms follow dust, pollen, pets or another exposure, and reduce contact where practical. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear irritants; use safe water and clean equipment. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antihistamine or nasal spray, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Drink fluids and avoid smoke, which can further irritate the throat.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, faintness or difficulty breathing. Arrange prompt review for inability to swallow, one-sided throat swelling, severe pain, pus, high fever or symptoms that are worsening. Make an appointment when the sore throat lasts beyond the expected allergy flare, keeps returning, or is not helped by a suitable allergy plan.
