What an ulcer can mean

Basal cell carcinoma can damage the surface of the skin, leaving a sore that crusts, bleeds, heals and returns, or fails to close. The ulcer may be subtle and can occur on sun-exposed skin. Its appearance alone cannot show how deep or extensive the tumour is, so examination is needed.

Seek urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, pus, fever, or severe pain. Do not postpone review because the sore seems small.
