When to worry about sensitive skin with perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis often causes small red or skin-coloured bumps, dryness, burning, and sensitivity around the mouth, nose, or eyes. The lip border may remain relatively clear. Cosmetics, heavy creams, fragranced products, topical steroids, and irritating toothpaste can aggravate the area. Because several facial rashes look alike, persistent sensitivity may need examination rather than repeated product changes.

Keep a simple routine with gentle cleansing and avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, fragranced products, and thick occlusive creams unless prescribed. Do not start or stop a topical steroid on the face without medical guidance. Record products used near the mouth and the timing of flares. If treatment has been prescribed, use it for the instructed course and expect improvement to be gradual.

Arrange review if bumps or burning continue, recur after treatment, spread beyond the usual facial area, or interfere with eating and sleep. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, open sores, or a rash involving the eyes. Eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, or marked eyelid swelling needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the rash is perioral dermatitis or a look-alike such as contact dermatitis or rosacea, which products to stop, and how to protect the skin while it settles. Mention steroid use, toothpaste changes, cosmetics, and any eye symptoms.
