When to worry about scaly skin with tinea versicolor

Tinea versicolor is a superficial yeast-related skin condition that can produce fine scale over lighter, darker, or pinkish patches. It commonly affects the upper chest, back, shoulders, neck, or upper arms, especially where heat and sweating are present. The colour difference may remain after the scale and yeast activity settle, so appearance alone does not show whether treatment has worked. Pain, marked swelling, pus, or a very different rash deserves another look.

Keep the skin cool and dry when possible, change out of sweaty clothing, and avoid sharing towels or clothing. Use an antifungal wash or cream exactly as directed, and do not apply steroid cream to a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician has advised it. Take a clear photo before treatment and note whether the surface scale is changing, rather than judging only by colour.

Book an assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain, the rash affects the face or a large area, or scaling continues after a complete directed treatment course. Seek prompt care for fever, severe tenderness, pus, blisters, open skin, facial swelling, or rapid progression. People with reduced immunity should obtain medical advice earlier when a widespread or unusual rash appears.
