When to worry about scaly skin with seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis often causes flaky or greasy scale in areas with many oil glands, such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, ears, and chest. It may come with itch, redness, or burning. Flakes can vary from fine and dry to thicker and yellowish. A flare can be triggered by stress, illness, weather changes, or irritating products; persistent scale can also overlap with psoriasis, contact dermatitis, or another scalp condition.

Wash affected skin gently and avoid picking, scrubbing, fragranced products, and very hot water. Use a treatment shampoo or cream only as directed on its label or by a clinician, giving the product enough contact time to work. Keep a note of where the scale appears, whether it itches, and what preceded the flare. Do not share combs, hats, or medicated products without advice.

Arrange a dermatology review if scale keeps returning despite appropriate care, covers new body areas, causes marked hair shedding, or interferes with sleep. Seek prompt medical attention for warmth, swelling, pus, honey-coloured crusts, open sores, fever, severe pain, or rapid worsening. Scaling around the eyes with eye pain, light sensitivity, or vision change needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the appearance fits seborrheic dermatitis or another condition, which cleanser or medicated treatment suits the affected area, how long to use it, and what to do between flares. Mention any steroid, cosmetic, hair, or skin products that preceded the change.
