When to worry about scaly skin if you have ringworm

Most people with Ringworm notice scaly skin in a round or expanding patch, often with a more active edge and clearer centre. It may itch, crack, or spread to nearby skin. Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm, and different rashes can look similar.

Scalp involvement can cause tender scaling, broken hairs, or areas of hair loss. Nail involvement may make a nail thick, brittle, discoloured, or separated. These sites often need clinician-directed treatment rather than relying on a skin cream alone.

Use an antifungal exactly as directed and keep the area clean and dry. Wash hands after applying it, do not share towels or clothing, and launder items that touch the rash. Avoid steroid cream on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician has paired it with a suitable plan, because steroids can alter its appearance.

Arrange medical advice if the rash involves the scalp, beard, nails, face, or a large area, or if it keeps spreading despite correct use of treatment. Seek prompt care for pus, rapidly increasing warmth, severe pain, fever, or swelling. Children, people with reduced immunity, and household members with similar symptoms may need tailored guidance.

Ask whether testing is needed, which treatment suits the body site, how long to continue it, whether close contacts or pets need checking, and how to prevent reinfection.
