When to worry about scaly skin if you have ichthyosis

Short answer
Scaly Skin is a common presentation of Ichthyosis, but seek care when scaling cracks, bleeds, becomes infected, limits movement, or changes despite your established skin-care routine.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What ichthyosis scaling can mean
Most people with Ichthyosis notice scaly skin because the outer layer does not shed normally. Scales may feel rough, tight, or itchy and can be more noticeable in dry weather. The pattern may vary across the limbs, trunk, scalp, hands, or feet depending on the type of ichthyosis.
Deep fissures can make everyday movement uncomfortable and create openings for infection. Redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, increasing pain, or a bad smell around a crack is not simply dry scaling and should be checked.
What you can do now
Apply the moisturiser recommended for you soon after bathing, keep showers lukewarm, and use a gentle cleanser on areas that need it. Pat rather than rub the skin dry. Avoid forcefully peeling scales or using a strong exfoliant on cracked skin, and follow any prescribed keratolytic treatment carefully.
When to seek care
Book a review if scaling is spreading, painful, interfering with sleep or walking, or no longer responding to your usual routine. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly worsening redness, pus, marked swelling, or painful cracks. Reduced sweating with overheating, dizziness, or weakness also needs urgent advice because thick scaling can affect heat release.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your moisturiser and scale-softening treatment are still suitable, how to protect fissures, whether infection is present, and how to manage overheating or itch during dry weather.
