When to worry about skin redness if you have cellulitis

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection affecting deeper layers of skin. The area may feel hot, tender, swollen, and increasingly uncomfortable, with redness that expands beyond its starting point. Skin may look different on different skin tones, so warmth, pain, swelling, and function matter too.

Red streaking, swollen glands, drainage, a blister, or a wound near the area can add useful clues. Redness after an insect bite or minor injury has several possible causes, so examination is needed when infection is suspected.

Contact a clinician promptly if cellulitis is suspected. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and rest the affected limb if movement increases discomfort. Elevating a swollen arm or leg may help while you wait.

Marking the outer edge of redness with the time can help you describe whether it is spreading, but do not delay care to monitor it. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek emergency help for confusion, faintness, trouble breathing, severe weakness, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain out of proportion to the skin changes, purple or black areas, or skin blisters with a rapidly worsening illness.

Arrange same-day assessment for fever, chills, worsening swelling or pain, red streaks, pus, involvement near the eye, or cellulitis in a person with diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system. If treatment has started but symptoms are worsening, contact the prescriber promptly.

Ask what may have allowed the infection to enter, how to protect the affected skin, when improvement should begin, and which changes mean the treatment needs review. Mention allergies, recent antibiotics, diabetes, circulation problems, and immune conditions.
