When to worry about a skin rash with intertrigo

Intertrigo is irritation where skin rubs against skin and moisture remains trapped, such as beneath the breasts, in the groin, armpits, abdomen, or between the buttocks. The fold may look red, raw, moist, cracked, or sore. A yeast or bacterial infection can develop in the damaged skin. Pus, yellow crust, unpleasant odour, increasing warmth, marked tenderness, open sores, or redness extending beyond the fold deserves medical review.

Gently cleanse the area, pat it fully dry, and reduce rubbing with loose, breathable clothing. Change damp garments and use a clean, dry barrier between touching skin surfaces if advised by a clinician or pharmacist. Avoid scrubbing, perfumed products, and sharing towels. Do not apply a steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic cream without suitable guidance, because the wrong product can obscure the appearance or worsen some infections.

Book a clinical review if the rash keeps returning, cracks deeply, limits movement, or does not improve with careful drying and friction reduction. Seek prompt attention for rapid spread, pus, foul odour, increasing pain, warmth, swelling, fever, or red streaks. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, or poor circulation should seek advice early when a fold rash breaks the skin, because infection may progress more quickly.
