When to worry about painful skin with hidradenitis suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa can cause tender, deep lumps in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, or under the breasts. Lesions may drain, heal slowly, or form tunnels beneath the skin. Repeated pain in the same area can affect movement, sleep, and mood and is a reason to review the treatment plan.

Use gentle cleansing, loose clothing, and non-stick dressings if a lesion drains. Avoid squeezing, picking, harsh scrubbing, and shaving directly over painful areas. Keep a record of flare locations, drainage, pain triggers, and healing time so a dermatologist can match treatment to the pattern.

Arrange prompt review when pain is worsening, lesions are appearing more often, drainage has a strong odour, or wounds are not healing.
