When to worry about painful skin with cellulitis

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper layers of skin that can cause tenderness, warmth, swelling, and redness. The affected area may enlarge over time, and the edge can become easier to see. Pain that seems out of proportion to the visible skin changes, blistering, or darkening skin is especially concerning.

Contact a clinician promptly rather than waiting for the redness to resolve by itself. Keep the area clean, avoid rubbing or massaging it, and raise an affected arm or leg when comfortable. Marking the outer edge of redness can help you describe whether it is spreading, but it does not replace an examination.

Seek urgent assessment if redness spreads quickly, pain escalates, swelling affects the face or eye, or you develop fever, chills, dizziness, confusion, or unusual drowsiness. Emergency help is appropriate for difficulty breathing, fainting, or severe illness. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should seek advice early.

Ask what treatment is needed, how soon improvement should begin, and which changes mean you should return. Mention the skin break, bite, wound, or procedure that came before the symptoms, along with allergies and medicines you take.
