When to worry about painful skin with boils

A boil is a tender, inflamed infection around a hair follicle. Pressure from swelling can make the surrounding skin sore, warm, and tight. Pain that is steadily worsening, extends beyond the lump, or is joined by red streaks may signal that inflammation is spreading and should not be managed by squeezing.

Apply a clean warm compress for comfort, wash your hands before and after touching the area, and cover any drainage with a clean dressing. Do not pierce or squeeze the boil, share towels, or shave across it. Arrange medical advice if it is not settling, keeps returning, or makes movement difficult.

Seek prompt care for a boil on the face, near the eye, or over the spine; rapidly spreading redness; red streaks; increasing swelling; or pain that is difficult to control. Seek urgent help for fever, chills, confusion, faintness, or feeling severely unwell, especially if several boils appear together.

Ask whether the boil needs drainage, a swab, or prescription treatment, and how to keep it covered. Tell the clinician about repeated boils, diabetes, immune problems, or medicines that affect immunity because these details can change the care plan.
