When to worry about skin lumps with neurofibroma

Neurofibromas may feel soft or firm and can sit within or beneath the skin. A familiar lump that remains stable may be monitored as part of your usual care. New growth, a marked change in firmness, pain that does not settle, numbness, tingling, or reduced movement deserves review because the clinician may need to examine the area and nerves around it.

Do not squeeze, cut, or repeatedly press the lump. Note when the change began, whether its size or texture has altered, and whether pain occurs at rest or with touch. Take a clear photograph beside a familiar object for comparison, and arrange an appointment with a dermatologist or clinician familiar with neurofibroma.

Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, persistent or night-time pain, new weakness, loss of sensation, trouble using a nearby limb, or a lump that becomes fixed and hard. Seek urgent help if severe pain appears suddenly or if the area is accompanied by spreading redness, fever, or feeling very unwell.
