When to worry about skin lumps if you have lipoma

Skin Lumps is a very common presentation of Lipoma. A lipoma is a collection of fatty tissue beneath the skin and often feels soft, rubbery, and mobile when gently pressed. It may be painless and slow-changing, although its position can make it noticeable during movement or clothing changes. Touch alone cannot confirm the diagnosis, particularly for a deep, firm, or newly noticed lump.

Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly massage the lump. Observe its position, firmness, mobility, tenderness, and any change in its outline. Arrange a routine examination if you are unsure what it is or if it interferes with clothing, movement, or comfort. A clinician may decide that examination is enough or recommend imaging when the lump is deep or atypical.

Book prompt medical advice if the lump enlarges quickly, becomes painful, feels hard or fixed, causes weakness or altered sensation, or lies deep beneath the skin. Seek review if the overlying skin changes, the lump bleeds or ulcerates, or the diagnosis has never been confirmed. Sudden severe pain or rapidly worsening swelling needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the lump’s depth, movement, and texture fit a lipoma, whether imaging is appropriate, and whether removal is needed for symptoms or uncertainty. Tell the clinician when you first noticed it and describe any recent change in size or comfort.
