When to worry about skin lumps if you have skin cyst

Skin Lumps is a very common presentation of Skin Cyst. An epidermoid cyst is a closed sac beneath the skin that may contain keratin. It can be smooth, rounded, and slow to change when quiet. If inflamed or ruptured, it may become red, swollen, warm, tender, or release thick material. These features can overlap with an abscess, so an examination may be needed.

Keep the area clean and avoid squeezing, lancing, or trying to empty the sac yourself. A warm compress may ease discomfort while you arrange advice. If it opens, cover it with a clean dressing and wash your hands after changing it. Record whether the lump returns after drainage, since the sac may remain beneath the skin.

Arrange prompt care for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, fever, or a lump that enlarges quickly. Seek an assessment for a cyst near the eye, one that restricts movement, or one that repeatedly ruptures. A new or unusual lump should also be examined rather than labelled a cyst without a diagnosis.

Ask whether the lump is inflamed or infected, whether it needs treatment now, and whether complete removal should be considered after inflammation settles. Ask how to protect the opening and which changes should prompt urgent review.
