When to worry about skin lumps if you have boils

Wash your hands after touching it, do not squeeze or pierce the lump, and avoid sharing towels, razors, or clothing. Keep surrounding skin clean and watch whether redness, swelling, tenderness, or drainage is changing. Repeated boils deserve an appointment to discuss possible triggers and prevention.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a boil near the eye, nose, or spine, a lump that is enlarging quickly, redness that is spreading, severe pain, fever, chills, or feeling unwell. Seek advice sooner if you have diabetes, reduced immunity, or repeated episodes. Urgent assessment is sensible when the lump makes movement difficult or drainage has a strong odor and the surrounding skin is increasingly hot.

Ask whether the lump needs drainage, whether a sample is needed, how to dress it safely, and what signs would mean the infection is spreading. Mention when it began, whether similar lumps have returned, and any medicines or health conditions that affect healing.
