When to Worry About Crusting Skin with Impetigo

Impetigo is a contagious bacterial infection of the outer skin. Small blisters or sores can break, ooze, and dry into a characteristic crust, often around the nose and mouth but also on exposed arms or legs. It can spread through scratching and close contact. A crust alone does not show whether the infection is mild or needs prescription treatment; the speed of spread and the person’s overall health matter.

Gently clean the affected skin, pat it dry, and cover sores with a clean dressing when practical. Wash hands often, avoid picking, and do not share towels, clothing, pillows, or personal items. Keep children away from close-contact activities until a clinician confirms when it is reasonable to return. Use treatment exactly as prescribed and finish the advised course.

Arrange medical advice when sores are multiplying, spreading, painful, swollen, or not settling with the recommended care. Seek urgent help for fever, marked weakness, rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, or involvement around the eyes. A clinician may need to distinguish impetigo from eczema, another infection, or a deeper skin problem.

Ask how long the infection may remain contagious, whether a swab or prescription medicine is needed, and how to clean the skin safely. Mention any eczema, diabetes, immune problems, recent contacts with similar sores, or treatment that has already been tried.
