When to Worry About Crusting Skin with Eczema Herpeticum

Eczema herpeticum is a viral infection affecting skin with eczema or another disrupted barrier. It may produce clusters of painful, similar-looking blisters or punched-out sores that weep and crust. People can feel unwell, and the rash may spread quickly. Because infection near the eyes can threaten vision, facial or eye-area symptoms require especially prompt attention.

Contact an urgent medical service as soon as possible if eczema herpeticum is suspected. Avoid scratching, squeezing, or sharing towels, bedding, razors, or cosmetics. Wash hands after touching the area and keep it gently covered if advised. Do not wait for crusts to fall away or rely on home treatment to judge whether the infection is settling.

Seek urgent assessment for rapidly spreading painful sores, fever, chills, unusual tiredness, or involvement of the eyelids, eye, lips, or mouth. Emergency help is appropriate for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or difficulty drinking. Early antiviral treatment may be needed after an examination.

Ask whether the sores need testing, how to protect other people, and which eczema products are safe during the infection. Explain how quickly the rash changed, whether the lesions are painful or itchy, and whether you have eye symptoms or fever.
