Molluscum contagiosum causes small, smooth, firm bumps that may have a central indentation. A bump may become red or itchy as the immune response develops, but marked tenderness, warmth, pus, or redness extending beyond the lesion can suggest irritation or infection instead.

Keep bumps covered when practical, avoid scratching, and do not share towels, razors, or clothing that touches the affected skin. Wash hands after touching the area and avoid shaving across lesions. Do not burn, cut, or apply wart products without advice. A clinician can discuss observation or treatment based on age, location, symptoms, and the person’s overall health.

Arrange medical review when bumps are painful, heavily inflamed, draining, crusted, or spreading despite sensible precautions.
