When to worry about skin blisters if you have bullous pemphigoid

Bullous Pemphigoid can cause firm, tense blisters on itchy or inflamed skin. Blisters may break and leave raw areas that are vulnerable to infection. New soreness in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, eye irritation, or widespread skin loss changes the urgency and should be reported rather than managed only at home.

Do not deliberately burst blisters. Keep affected areas clean, cover open skin with a non-stick dressing, and avoid adhesive products directly on fragile skin. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and tell your clinician about every medicine, supplement, or new product. Reduce friction from tight clothing and protect the skin from bumps.

Contact your treating clinician promptly when new blisters continue appearing, wounds are not healing, or itching prevents sleep. Seek urgent care for fever, pus, increasing warmth, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, dehydration, breathing difficulty, eye pain, or trouble swallowing. Older adults and people with other illnesses may need especially close monitoring.

Ask how to dress open blisters, which warning signs indicate infection, and whether your treatment needs adjustment. Discuss mouth, eye, or genital symptoms, wound care supplies, falls or friction, and any difficulty taking medicines.
