When to Worry About Shoulder Popping With Shoulder Instability

Short answer
Shoulder Popping and Clicking is a common presentation of Shoulder Instability, but repeated slipping, injury, weakness, numbness, or a visible deformity needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common presentation
- Popping and clicking can occur with shoulder instability.
- Urgent warning signs
- A visible deformity, severe injury pain, cold or numb hand, or sudden weakness.
Understanding the sensation
Shoulder instability means the ball-and-socket joint does not feel reliably centred during some movements. Popping or clicking may occur with a slipping, shifting, or apprehensive feeling, especially when the arm is raised and rotated. A sound alone cannot establish the cause. Repeated episodes, reduced confidence using the arm, or symptoms after a dislocation or forceful injury deserve clinical evaluation.
Protect the shoulder
Avoid positions that make the shoulder feel as if it may slide out, and do not deliberately reproduce the pop. Keep the shoulder moving gently in comfortable positions. Record any injury, direction of the slipping sensation, activity involved, and changes in strength or sensation. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess stability, movement, and muscle control before recommending exercises.
When to seek help
Seek urgent care if the shoulder is visibly out of place, the arm cannot move, severe pain follows an injury, or the hand becomes cold, pale, numb, or weak. Get prompt assessment for repeated slipping, a new loss of strength, or persistent tingling. Chest pressure, breathlessness, faintness, or sweating with shoulder discomfort also needs urgent medical help.
Questions for your appointment
Ask whether the shoulder is partially slipping or fully dislocating, what positions to avoid, and how stability will be tested. Ask when strengthening can begin, how to respond to another episode, and which symptoms should lead to urgent care.

Questions people ask
Should I pop the shoulder to test it?
No. Reproducing the movement can aggravate instability or provoke another slipping episode.
Does clicking prove the shoulder is unstable?
No. Clicking has several possible causes; instability is assessed from the full pattern of symptoms and examination.
