When to worry about shoulder pain with calcific tendinitis

Calcific tendinitis involves calcium deposits within a shoulder tendon. Pain can be intense, restrict lifting, and flare when the deposit irritates nearby tissues. Stiffness may follow. Severe pain alone does not show how much tendon damage is present, so an examination helps distinguish a flare from a tear, infection, fracture, or another shoulder condition.

Rest from painful overhead work and heavy carrying, but avoid holding the shoulder completely still for long periods unless a clinician advises it. Use a wrapped cold pack for a short spell if it helps. Book an appointment when pain keeps returning, movement is shrinking, or everyday tasks remain difficult. Treatment may include tailored exercises and other options chosen after examination.

Go for urgent care if the pain began after a significant impact, the arm suddenly cannot lift, the shoulder looks deformed, or the hand becomes numb, pale, or cold. Seek prompt advice for fever with a hot, red, swollen shoulder, or for pain that escalates quickly rather than easing.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, whether the deposit or tendon needs imaging, what movements are safe, and what should trigger a return visit. Tell the clinician how quickly the pain began and whether there was an injury.
