When to worry about severe abdominal pain in pregnancy with ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus, often in a fallopian tube. Pain may be one-sided, persistent, or worsening, and it can occur with vaginal bleeding or dizziness. Internal bleeding can develop if the pregnancy tissue damages the tube.

Pain severity can change quickly, and symptoms may be serious even when bleeding is light. A pregnancy test, ultrasound, and blood tests help clinicians locate the pregnancy and assess your condition.

If ectopic pregnancy is known or suspected and you have severe pain, contact emergency services or go to an emergency department now. Do not drive yourself if dizzy, weak, or faint. Bring medication details and pregnancy information if this is immediately available.

Avoid waiting for a scheduled scan when pain is severe or worsening. Tell the team about bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, vomiting, dizziness, or collapse.

Treat sudden or worsening abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, marked weakness, fast breathing, confusion, or collapse as an emergency. Call for immediate help if these occur, particularly with vaginal bleeding. Lie down if you feel faint while waiting for assistance.
