When to worry about a runny nose with influenza

Influenza often begins with a sudden unwell feeling and may include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, marked tiredness, cough, sore throat, congestion, and a runny nose. Nasal symptoms can be less prominent than the general aches and fever, but they still occur. A runny nose cannot distinguish influenza from other respiratory illnesses. Testing or clinical assessment may be useful when treatment decisions or protection of vulnerable household members are concerns.

Rest and drink small, frequent amounts of fluid. Stay home while you feel acutely unwell and follow local infection-control advice. Saline spray, warm drinks, and gentle nose blowing may ease irritation. Ask a clinician promptly whether prescription antiviral treatment is appropriate if symptoms have just started or you have a condition that raises the risk of complications. Check every over-the-counter product for duplicate ingredients before taking it.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician if you cannot keep fluids down, urination becomes very infrequent, fever returns after settling, or cough and overall illness worsen after initial improvement. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic medical conditions may need advice earlier in the illness.
