Short answer

Most people with Allergic Rhinitis notice runny nose, but seek medical advice when symptoms are severe, persistent, unusual for your usual allergy pattern, or affecting breathing and daily activities.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Clear runny nose with sneezing, itching, or watery eyes
Book a review
Symptoms persist, recur often, or disrupt sleep and daily activities
Seek urgent care
Breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, or faintness

What the symptom can mean

Allergic rhinitis happens when the lining of the nose reacts to an allergen such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. Runny nose is a very common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis. It often appears with repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, nasal blockage, or itchy and watery eyes. Clear, watery mucus and symptoms that follow a familiar trigger can fit this pattern.

A change in the pattern deserves attention. Thick or foul-smelling discharge, facial pain, fever, symptoms mainly on one side, recurrent nosebleeds, or symptoms after an injury may have another explanation. A clinician can assess the nose and consider infection, irritation, medication effects, or another nasal problem.

What you can do

Notice when the runny nose starts and record possible triggers, associated symptoms, and anything that improves or worsens it. Reduce exposure to a known trigger where practical, keep indoor spaces well ventilated, and avoid cigarette smoke and strongly scented products. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear irritants; use safe water and clean equipment as directed.

A pharmacist or doctor can help you choose an appropriate allergy treatment, such as a nasal spray or an antihistamine, based on your age, other medicines, pregnancy status, and health conditions. Follow the product instructions and do not continue a treatment that causes troublesome effects without advice.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical review if the runny nose keeps returning despite sensible trigger avoidance, interferes with sleep or work, or needs frequent self-treatment. Seek prompt care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe facial pain, a high fever, heavy bleeding, or a clear watery discharge that begins after a head injury.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what pattern best explains your symptoms, whether allergy testing could help identify triggers, and which treatment is suitable for your other medicines or health conditions. You can also ask how long to try the treatment, how to use a nasal spray correctly, and which changes should prompt an earlier review.
