When to worry about ringing in the ears with earwax buildup

Ringing in the Ears is a common presentation of Earwax Buildup. A blocked ear can alter sound conduction and create pressure, muffled hearing, or tinnitus. Ringing may have other causes, including inner-ear problems, medication effects, or exposure to loud sound, so it should not automatically be attributed to wax.

Keep the ear dry if there is discharge, and note whether the ringing changes after wax is assessed or removed by a trained professional.

Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, severe vertigo, facial weakness, severe pain, blood or pus from the ear, or ringing that began after a head injury. Book a routine review when symptoms remain after wax treatment or repeatedly return.

Ask whether the canal is blocked, whether the eardrum can be seen safely, what removal method is appropriate, and whether hearing should be checked if the ringing continues.
