When to worry about red eye with conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin surface covering the eye and inner eyelids. Redness, watering, irritation, gritty discomfort, eyelid crusting, or discharge can occur; the cause may be viral, bacterial, allergic, or related to irritation. Most people with Conjunctivitis notice red eye. The colour alone cannot identify the cause, and pain or sight changes are less typical of uncomplicated surface irritation.

Wash hands often, avoid touching or rubbing the eyes, and do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops. Gently clean crusting with clean water and a fresh pad for each eye. Stop wearing contact lenses until symptoms have cleared and a clinician or optometrist confirms it is safe to restart. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether lubricating drops or other treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for severe pain, sudden reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, an eye injury, a chemical splash, or swelling around the eye that affects movement or sight. Arrange prompt review for contact-lens wearers with a painful or very red eye, heavy discharge, symptoms mainly in one eye, or worsening symptoms. Chemical exposure requires immediate rinsing with clean running water while obtaining emergency advice.
