When to worry about red eye with allergic conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis occurs when the surface of the eye reacts to an allergen. It commonly causes redness, itching, watering, puffy eyelids, and a burning or gritty feeling, often in both eyes. Most people with Allergic Conjunctivitis notice red eye. Intense itching points towards allergy, while significant pain, light sensitivity, or reduced vision suggests that another eye problem may need examination.

Avoid rubbing your eyes, wash your hands after outdoor exposure, and use a cool clean compress for comfort. Reduce contact with known triggers and keep windows closed when outdoor allergens are troublesome. A pharmacist or eye clinician can advise on lubricating drops or allergy treatment. Do not share eye drops, towels, or cosmetics, and replace eye makeup used during an active eye problem.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden vision loss or blurring, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, injury, a chemical splash, a bulging eye, or swelling that affects vision. Prompt review is also sensible when one eye becomes markedly worse, discharge is heavy, contact lenses are involved, or symptoms do not improve with allergy measures. Rinse a chemical-exposed eye with clean running water while obtaining emergency advice.
