When to worry about a rash with fever in Stevens-Johnson syndrome

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious reaction in which the skin and lining tissues become inflamed and damaged. The illness may begin with fever, feeling unwell, sore throat, or burning eyes before a tender rash appears. Red or dusky patches can develop blisters and detach, while the lips, mouth, eyes, nose, or genitals may form painful sores. Because damaged skin loses protection and fluids, the condition needs hospital evaluation rather than home observation.

Call emergency services or go to an emergency department if this condition is suspected. Take the medicine packages or a written list of every prescription, over-the-counter product, and supplement. Tell clinicians when each was started and when symptoms changed. Do not apply adhesive dressings, burst blisters, or take another suspected dose unless the treating team specifically instructs you.

Emergency care is needed for skin pain, rapidly spreading redness, blisters, peeling, open skin, mouth sores that limit drinking, eye pain or light sensitivity, genital sores, breathing trouble, confusion, faintness, or reduced urine. A child, older adult, pregnant person, or anyone with another serious illness may become unwell quickly and should be assessed without delay.

Ask which medicine may have triggered the reaction, how it will be documented, how the skin and eyes will be protected, and which symptoms should be reported immediately. Ask whether an eye specialist or other specialist needs to examine you and how future medicines will be checked.
