When to worry about rash with fever in cellulitis

Cellulitis is an infection in deeper layers of skin. The affected area may be red, warm, swollen, tender, and enlarging, with fever or chills. It can follow a cut, insect bite, cracked skin, wound, or another opening in the skin. A rash with fever can have other causes, so a clinician may need to examine the pattern and your general condition.

Contact a healthcare service promptly and describe where the redness began, how quickly it changed, and whether you have fever or chills. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing it, and remove tight clothing or jewellery near swelling. Marking the edge of redness can help you notice spread, but it should not delay assessment or prescribed treatment.

Same-day assessment is appropriate for a hot, painful, expanding rash with fever, especially on the face, hand, or near a joint. Seek emergency help for confusion, faintness, severe weakness, fast breathing, severe pain, purple or blistering skin, or rapidly spreading swelling. Extra caution is needed when immunity is reduced or when diabetes affects wound healing.

Ask whether the rash is cellulitis or another infection, what treatment is needed, how soon improvement should be checked, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently. Tell the clinician about allergies, recent wounds, and medicines that affect immunity.
