When to worry about postnasal drip with allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis inflames the lining of the nose after exposure to a trigger such as pollen, dust mites, mould, or animal dander. Extra mucus can move from the nose into the throat, causing throat clearing, cough, a tickly feeling, or hoarseness. Sneezing, an itchy nose, and watery eyes support an allergy pattern, although infection, irritants, sinus disease, and reflux can cause similar drainage.

Notice which places, seasons, or activities bring symptoms on and reduce exposure where practical. Saline nasal rinsing may clear irritants when performed with safe water and clean equipment. Use nasal sprays or antihistamines according to a clinician or pharmacist's advice, especially if you are pregnant, have other conditions, or take regular medicines. Avoid prolonged use of decongestant nasal sprays unless advised, as they can worsen blockage when overused.

Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, severe wheezing, or faintness after an exposure. Arrange a medical review for one-sided blockage, recurrent nosebleeds, facial pain or swelling, fever, foul-smelling discharge, blood in the mucus, or symptoms that persist despite appropriate allergy treatment. Sleep disruption and reduced daily function are also reasons to revisit the plan.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergic rhinitis or another cause, which nasal treatment suits you, and whether allergy testing or an asthma review is useful. Mention wheezing, medication effects, and any trigger you have identified.
