When to worry about bleeding after menopause with endometrial polyps

An endometrial polyp is a growth from the lining of the womb. Its surface can be delicate and may bleed, leading to spotting, pink discharge, or a flow after menopause. Polyps may cause no other symptom, although pelvic discomfort or discharge can occur. Bleeding after menopause can also come from vaginal dryness, infection, medicines, or changes in the womb lining, so the symptom needs a proper assessment rather than an assumption about its cause.

Contact your gynaecology service to report the episode. Note when it happened, how long it lasted, the colour and amount, and whether it followed sex or activity. Mention pain, discharge, urinary symptoms, and medicines that affect bleeding. Your clinician may discuss an examination, ultrasound, or hysteroscopy; removal may allow the polyp to be examined, depending on its appearance and your circumstances.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy or does not stop, or if you feel faint, dizzy, unusually weak, short of breath, or have severe pelvic pain. Fever, worsening pain, or difficulty passing urine also needs prompt attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are escalating or affecting your ability to function.

Ask whether the polyp could explain the bleeding, what examination is suitable, and whether it should be removed or sampled. Clarify what the pathology result may show, how follow-up will work, and which changes should lead you to seek earlier care.
